Holy Communion

Bethel Lutheran practices “close” Communion, that is, we desire those taking Communion to agree with what our church believes and practices. Concerning Holy Communion, we ask that those who wish to commune agree to the following statement:

I believe that God sent His Son, Jesus as my Savior from sin, Satan, and death, and that He is Lord of my life. I repent of my sins and ask God’s forgiveness for Jesus’ sake. I believe the Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that with the bread and wine all communicants receive His true Body and Blood. I resolve to dedicate myself anew to my Lord through His Church, by regular worship, study of His Word, faithful witness, and loving service.

Baptism

People participating in a baptism ceremony at a church in Bladensburg.

Lutherans believe that the Bible teaches that a person is saved by God’s grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ alone. The Bible tells us that such “faith comes by hearing” (Rom 10:17). Jesus Himself commands Baptism and tells us that Baptism is water used together with the Word of God (Matt 28:19- 20). Because of this, we believe that Baptism is one of the miraculous means of grace (another is God’s Word as it is written or spoken), through which God creates and/or strengthens the gift of faith in a person’s heart. If you wish to be baptized or to have a child baptized, please contact us.
